ODDBALLERS

Blink and you miss it.

This was a really exciting opportunity brought to us by our friends at Maverick Media. An opportunity to test our animation metal in the most chaotic single shot sequence we’ve ever took on.

This 30 second trailer was made to accompany the release of Ubisoft game, Oddballers - a hilariously charming and totally bonkers multiplayer party game where each round is a new, absurd type of dodgeball.

BLINK AND YOU MISS IT

The greatest challenge we faced creating this animation was how to showcase the chaos of the scene, but in a way where you could read what was going on.

From the get go, the client’s brief was ‘Blink and you miss it’, so we had to figure out how to lead the viewer’s eye to where we wanted them to look.

The first pass of layout looked confusing, but with a couple of iterations we found the best way to lead the eye was to have the camera ‘catch up’ with the action.

You can in the breakdown how the animation progressed through animatic, to layout, to polish, to render.

Some subtle timing changes were made along the way to make things clearer, but the bulk of the timing work was done in the first pass of animation.

KEY ART

Along with the main sequence, we created a few key images to accompany the trailer. These were designed to portray a moment of chaos you could expect in the game, while also exemplifying the funny and crazy qualities of our loveable bumpkins.

THE CREW

The Oddballers game assets already existed, so our job was to take these low res assets and make them trailer ready. We referenced the general shape, how they moved, and created a versatile rig that we could repurpose with different outfits to create the dfferent peronalities in the game.

Oh and they all had great names too. Meet Bronson, Miami Vice, Pixie Betty, Eivor, Granny, Hendrix, Karen and of course, Chicken.
