MATTA

GOLF IS GOOD

Golf is a sport with a bit of a bed rep - slightly elitist, with traditional rules and dress codes which is off-putting for many. But the game has changed.

Matta approached us to create a campaign to promote the mental and physical benefits of playing golf, while also helping attract a younger, more diverse audience.

The campaign for the R&A ended up at The Open Championship.

PITCH TO PICTURE

The project went through a lot of development, and behind every script suggestion, we created artwork and ideas to accompany new narrative directions.

Alongside this, we explored several ideas and styles to create a cast of characters that felt modern, relateable and likeable, while having a unique aesthetic bespoke to the films.

STORY

For the hero film, with 3 mini stories to cram into 60 seconds, the storyboarding and animatic went through several reviews and amends before we were able to tell each story with enough breathing space.

Once the broad strokes were there, we created a colour script to help tell the story, which again developed throughout the process.

FINDING THE LOOK

With the animatic and colour script in full flow, our attention shifted to the look of the environments.

We had played around with several ideas and treatments for things like foliage, bark, clouds and more, but wanted to create a set of rules for the world.

With a team of artists working on 2D backgrounds, we developed an art style for the background paintings which each artist could refer to help guide them with brushstrokes and the look of different elements.

MATCHING STYLE

With the painted aesthetic defined, there were several props that we needed to make in 3D to help integrate the characters into the world. We used the same rules and style to model, texture, and render a library of props so they would fit into the paintings seamlessly.

THREE BALL

FROM ALL ANGLES

A lot of time was spent developing a bespoke modeling style for our characters. Following on from the design stage, we wanted to create a unique aesthetic for our characters, while also making them appealable and relateable to a wide range of people. Each character represented a specific lifestyle - Garret being a workaholic, Gaz a slightly unhealthy man, and Gabi a new mum juggling work and parenthood. Golf was their tonic to reduce stress, increase fitness, and relax.
